CRYPT ABOVE MARILYN MONROE SOLD -- THEN BUYER BACKED OUT
The crypt above Marilyn Monroe's final resting place was sold for a staggering $4,602,100.
But hours later the successful Japanese bidder e-mailed to cancel the sale.
The crypt has been home to late entrepreneur Richard Poncher for 23 years since his death at 81.
His widow, Elsie, put it up for auction on eBay with an opening bid of $500,000 in the hope of paying off the $1.6 million mortgage on her Beverly Hills home.
The online auction, which started on August 14, attracted 21 bids, 11 for $4.5 million.
The winning bid was just $100 above the second highest when the auction closed.
But within hours of receiving an invoice the prospective buyer sent an email to Poncher's representative, mortgage broker Steve Miller, saying: “I am awfully sorry but I need to cancel this because of the paying problem.”
Now Miller has emailed the 11 top bidders, extending the sale for 24 hours.
Richard Poncher bought two crypts at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park from baseball great Joe DiMaggio during his 1954 divorce from the Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes star.
Monroe died of a drug overdose in 1962, aged 36, and her crypt became a shrine for her fans.
Elsie Poncher, who is in her 70s, plans to move her husband's remains into the crypt meant for her, and she will be cremated.
She revealed it will be the second time he will be moved since his death.
She told the Los Angeles Times when he was dying: “He said, If I croak, if you don't put me upside down over Marilyn I'll haunt you for the rest of your life.”
After the funeral she told the undertaker about the request and added: “I was standing right there and he turned him over.”
The cemetery is the last home for a number of stars, including Natalie Wood, Dean Martin, Mel Torme and Truman Capote, and most recently Farrah Fawcett.
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner bought the crypt next to Marilyn's in 1992 for $75,000.
One unoccupied crypt in the same section of the cemetery, the Corridor of Memories, is available for $250,000.
