PAINKILLERS SENT MELANIE GRIFFITH TO REHAB
Actor Antonio Banderas has revealed his wife Melanie Griffith went back into rehab because of painkillers.
He denied rumours that he issued her an ultimatum that he would end their 13-year marriage if she did not seek help.
And he hinted that although her stay at Cirque Lodge in Utah was only announced in August, she may have been there for months.
Shrek and Puss in Boots star Banderas, 49, told talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres: “It's not a rumour but let me explain to you. It was actually said in some magazine that I gave an ultimatum to my wife.
“That I present the matter of divorce because she has been involved in addictions and blah, blah, blah.
“Melanie has been addicted for many years and we always came out. We said it out loud. It was okay, we were never embarrassed of the situation but what happened was she was clean and sober for six years.”
That ended 18 months ago when Working Girl and Mulholland Falls star Griffith, 52, had a skiing accident and needed three operations on her knee, forcing her to use painkillers.
Banderas, who has a 12-year-old daughter, Stella, with Griffith, went on: “In March she came to me and said, 'I'm feeling a little bit weak in my determination for this, so I just thought to go to rehabilitation by myself.'
“So the whole entire family is supporting her, and I am supporting her, and at this particular time more than ever. I'm very proud of my wife.”
He said the whole family is taking an active role in her rehab, and he said other families do the same with their loved ones who are addicts.
“We have been following some type of therapy with other families,” he said. “There are a number of invisible heroes working in AA all around the world.
“I just say to families, 'Don't get embarrassed, just confront this problem head-on.
“'And don't hide from that because there is a beautiful gift at the end of the this tunnel, and it is the person that you love back, and that is what I am searching for.'”
Griffith has a long history of drink and drugs, dating back to her teenage years, and has been in rehab at least three time before.
In 1988 her Working Girl director Mike Nichol insisted she seek treatment for her demons.
Ten years later she went to rehab after becoming dependent on painkillers prescribed for a neck injury, and went back in 200 for the same problem.
