RICKY GERVAIS' BOVINE BIRTHDAY GIFT
Comedian Ricky Gervais has been given an unusual birthday present by a group of fans – a bull.
The creator of The Office turned 48 on Thursday, and the animal rights group People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals and an Indian animal rescue group gave him the gift in honour of his support of animals.
“Peta Europe has teamed up with Animal Rahat to give him a very unusual present – a bullock,” the group said on its website.
“Well, they haven't exactly gift-wrapped and mailed him a bullock – that would just be wrong – but they have rescued and retired a hardworking bullock through Animal Rahat and named the lucky guy 'Ricky' in Gervais' honour.
“Gervais' cute namesake is a 20-year-old bull who has worked in the sugar mill district in Sangli, India, his entire life, and would have been sent to slaughter if Animal Rahat had not rescued him.”
Peta decided on the “extra-special” present as thanks for the comedian's stand against well-meaning organisations which send animals to developing countries who may not have the money to feed and care for them.
He said: “There's nothing in it for the goat!”
The group also thank him for writing to Gordon Brown asking for the end of real bearskin for guardsmen's busbies, and for voicing a Peta video with singer Pink for a Stolen for Fashion video.
They called him: “One compassionate comedian who deserves a great big 'Thank you!'”
