TERI HATCHER ENTERS TRIATHLON
Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher is getting on her bike for a good cause next weekend.
She's also diving into the deep end and hoping to give her competitors a run for their money.
Hatcher, 44, is leading a team in Sunday's Nautica Malibu Triathlon to raise money for Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
She hopes to raise $20,000 from sponsors for her efforts – a 1.5 kilometre swim in the Pacific Ocean, a 40 kilometre bike ride and a 10 kilometre run.
Pledges so far stand at $3,370.
She was happy to take part when Disney, parent company of her hit show, asked her to enter because, ironically, she and a friend had been discussing their “bucket lists” – things they want to do before they die.
Hatcher recalled the chat, telling People magazine: “I want to learn to play a couple of songs on the guitar. I want to learn a few of those fancy dances from one of those Dancing With the Stars teachers.
“And I want to run a triathlon.”
She has been working out solidly for a month in preparation, and has completed the whole course twice.
Part of her training involves cycling to work several times a week, which she says has also cut down her carbon footprint, and she is running on a treadmill at home.
She joked: “So I've had to find room in my closet for the clothes that normally hang on it.”
And she is also swimming 50 to 80 laps in her pool.
She ways running is the hardest part.
“It's the least fun for me,” she went on. “By that point, I'm really tired, so the whole time I'm thinking, 'I'm not gong to make it.'”
She said she is not taking part for the sake of winning.
“I'm just out to do it and I did it,” she said. “I did surprise myself that I'm in better shape than I thought I was.
“I'm in it for the kids and just want to finish without walking. Well, I guess I don't really want to be last. I do have a bit of competitiveness left in me.”
And she said the worst thing about the whole event is not being able to listen to her ipod.
“Who can run without music?” she asked.
