YVES ST LAURENT RICHEST DEAD CELEB
French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent has toppled Elvis Presley as the king of dead rich celebrities.
Saint Laurent, who died of brain cancer in June last year, was named the biggest earner from beyond the grave by Forbes magazine.
His posthumous earnings for the year were a staggering $350 million thanks to a Christie's auction of his possessions, including art, antiques and furniture, which was split between two charities.
Many observers expected Michael Jackson to top the list after his sudden death in June, but he was beaten by legendary Broadway partnership Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, who made $235 million from the sale of their Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation and the rights to musicals including The Sound of Music, South Pacific and Oklahoma.
Jackson made his debut on the list in third place, with earnings of $90 million since he died, a third of it his share of the money Sony paid his estates for the rights to This Is It, the film featuring rehearsal footage of what should have been his sold-out concerts at London's O2 arena.
Elvis Presley, who topped the list the previous two years, ranked 4th, with $55 million.
Forbes estimates his income will rise next year, as his Graceland estate gears up to celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday.
Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkein rounded out the top five, earning $50 million from book sales and settling a long-running dispute with New Line Cinemas over profits from the film trilogy.
